Job Description:
President & Executive Director
Asian Pacific Fund
San Francisco, CA
About Asian Pacific Fund
Founded in 1993, the Asian Pacific Fund (APF) is the Bay Area's
only community foundation solely dedicated to uplifting Asian
American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI)
communities. With a mission to mobilize resources and amplify
voices, APF supports a vibrant network of over 90 local nonprofits
by providing flexible funding and culturally relevant
capacity-building programs. The organization drives systems change
through investment in data, research, and community-led solutions.
APF also mobilizes the Bay Area's AANHPI population of over two
million through advocacy, education, and collective action.
In 2024, APF underwent a transformative year by launching new
initiatives and expanding its reach. The organization introduced
its Accelerating Capacity for Transformation Fund, which empowers
key AANHPI nonprofits, and secured its first-ever county
contract-$1 million dedicated to expanding mental health services
and AANHPI utilization in Alameda County. On Thursday, June 6,
2024, APF hosted its 2024 AANHPI Summit on Reclaiming and
Redefining Mental Health at the , an APF nonprofit affiliate.
Nearly 180 registrants from community organizations, corporations,
government, philanthropy, and media present, joined the
organization in highlighting the importance and power of AANHPIs
advocating for mental health resources and culturally competent
services.
With a refreshed mission and momentum, APF is poised to amplify its
impact in the years ahead, ensuring that the voices and needs of
AANHPI communities remain central in shaping a more inclusive and
thriving Bay Area.

The Opportunity
The Asian Pacific Fund stands at a moment of unique and inspiring
possibility. With a 32-year track record of advancing equity for
AANHPI communities in the Bay Area, APF is poised to deepen its
impact and influence as it enters its next chapter. Bolstered by a
$5 million gift from MacKenzie Scott, a $12.6 million endowment,
and a strategic roadmap developed with the Bridgespan Group, the
organization is financially strong, strategically aligned, and
ready for bold, systems-level change.
APF seeks a visionary and grounded President & Executive Director
to lead this next phase-someone who can galvanize a
multigenerational community, strengthen internal capacity, and
raise visibility and resources for the organization's mission. With
a targeted annual budget of $4.2 million and a high-performing team
of eight full-time staff, the new leader will be entrusted with
shaping and advancing a strategic roadmap that has broad support
from its Board and staff.
The next President & Executive Director will inherit a strong
foundation: a values-aligned staff, an engaged and supportive
Board, and a respected brand. They will be responsible for
deepening APF's systems change efforts, expanding institutional
partnerships, and raising significant funding from individuals,
families, and corporate supporters. Looking ahead, the role will
also lead planning for a future endowment campaign to ensure
long-term sustainability.
This is a rare opportunity for a dynamic and relational
leader-someone who brings strategic insight, cultural fluency, and
a passion for equity-to shape the future of one of the region's
most trusted AANHPI institutions. The ideal candidate will balance
inspiration with operational excellence, foster a thriving culture
of philanthropy, and unlock new pathways for investment and
influence in AANHPI communities across the Bay Area.
Candidate Profile
The next President & Executive Director of the Asian Pacific Fund
will be a visionary, values-driven leader who embodies both
strategic clarity and deep community connection. This individual
will bring a blend of emotional intelligence, operational savvy,
and fundraising expertise-alongside a profound commitment to
advancing equity for AANHPI communities in the Bay Area. As the
public face of APF and a steward of its internal culture, the
Executive Director will lead with authenticity, care, and
purpose-building on APF's legacy while positioning the organization
for long-term impact. The following leadership competencies reflect
the qualities and capabilities essential to thriving in this
role.
Mission-Driven & Deeply Rooted in Community
The next President & Executive Director is a values-driven leader
with a deep commitment to the Asian Pacific Fund's mission and the
AANHPI communities of the Bay Area. Whether through lived
experience or long-standing engagement, they bring a strong
understanding of the community's needs, aspirations, and systemic
barriers. Grounded in long-term relationships and mutual respect,
they lead with integrity, humility, and compassion-building trust
across stakeholders, from grassroots leaders to high-net-worth
donors. Socially agile and relational in style, they serve as a
bridge between philanthropy and community, tradition and
innovation. In every action and decision, they embody APF's core
values: impact, leadership, community, and service.
Strategic and Impactful Fundraising
Fundraising is central to this role. The ideal candidate will bring
a strong track record of fundraising success, with a focus on
cultivating substantial philanthropic partnerships. They are clear
about the purpose of each fundraising effort-whether to raise
revenue, build relationships, connect with the community, or share
knowledge-and have experience with capital and endowment campaigns.
They are highly networked, especially with institutional funders,
and bring an ability to tap into relationships for funding,
knowledge, and visibility. They can clearly articulate APF's unique
role as an intermediary, bridging donors and the communities APF
serves. With authenticity and care, they bring others along in
supporting the mission, finding opportunities even in times of
crisis.
People-Centered Organizational Leadership
The next President & Executive Director will be a thoughtful,
inclusive leader who prioritizes internal team building,
sustainability, and capacity building-not just short-term metrics
or external outcomes. They understand the importance of modernizing
internal systems, processes, and structures to set APF up for
long-term success. This person believes in investing in the staff
and internal culture with the same care and intention given to
affiliates and external partners. They lead with emotional
intelligence and grace under pressure, creating space to pause,
reflect, refine, and grow. Not a micromanager, they trust and
empower their team, value work-life balance, and promote from
within. They will protect staff time and well-being, fostering an
inclusive and people-centered environment that supports continuous
learning, innovation, and sustainable growth.
Financially Savvy and Operationally Grounded
The ideal candidate is both a strategic thinker and a capable,
hands-on operator. They bring proven nonprofit leadership
experience and are confident navigating ambiguity, complexity, and
change with resilience and composure. Financially astute, they
understand nonprofit finance-including budgeting, financial
statements, endowment management, fund accounting, restricted vs.
unrestricted funds, and audits. They bring some experience with or
knowledge of donor-advised funds and recognize the importance of
building reserves and sustaining a healthy nonprofit business
model. With experience in managing operations, HR, and IT
systems-not just strategy and development-they will ensure the
organization runs efficiently and equitably. They know how to lead
a small, dedicated team with clarity and compassion, and they make
smart decisions that balance ambition with realism.
Authentic and Compelling Communicator
This leader is an inspiring and relatable communicator, equally
skilled at public speaking, relationship-building, and
behind-the-scenes engagement. They are honest and transparent, able
to connect across a wide range of audiences-from donors and funders
to affiliate leaders, Board members, and elected officials. They
are a dynamic storyteller who brings APF's mission and impact to
life in a way that moves people to act. As the public face of the
organization, they are comfortable representing APF at events, in
media, and within the broader philanthropic and civic landscape.
They communicate with clarity, warmth, and purpose, and they bring
energy and visibility to the organization in ways that deepen trust
and amplify impact.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The salary
range for this role is $240,000 - $280,000 with a generous benefits
package.
